Stephen’s weight loss journey through PT and boxing

The reason for starting my journey at Primal

I came to Primal because I really wanted to make a change in the way I was approaching my 50's. With increasing responsibilities at work and home I just wasn't making time for myself, or my fitness. I wanted to find somewhere that was local (so I couldn't woose out making excuses about how hard it was to get to) and somewhere that was responsive to what I wanted to do.

I think finding the right place to train, the right sorts of trainers and the right kind of supportive community was key to choosing a place like Primal.

Finding more than motivation

Well, work, an aging body (slowing metabolism), stress, insomnia all of the lovely trappings of a modern life were kinda holding me back (Not that I don't continue to have all of these things). But I actually think the hardest part was getting into the habit of doing exercise. Just getting up and out of the door is sometimes difficult, there's always a million and one excuses not to go, but really only one reason to actually go, which is to spend time focusing on yourself and your own goals for a change.

How did you overcome these challenges?

This might sound trite, but the folk at Primal, the clients and the staff made it easier for me to get out of bed in the morning and do some exercise. We worked on a phased plan to help build strength and fitness across a variety of classes and personal training sessions. I went from huffing and puffing while tying my shoelaces to being happy in my body. I think the level of genuine care from everyone at the gym helped a lot. The variety of classes, the friendly atmosphere and the ability to choose what to go to actually makes it enjoyable?! to exercise (as crazy as that sounds).

What was your best achievement whilst training at Primal?

I think being able to tie my shoes without puffing was pretty good, or perhaps being able to finish a fit class without feeling like I needed to vomit? Seriously though, the best achievement was actually feeling more in touch with my body, spending time on myself and feeling comfy in my body again, that was the best part.

What did you like most about training at Primal?

I think I've mentioned this already, but there is a genuine community feel to the gym. I might not know everyone's name, but we all share a common goal being there, and that shared struggle makes for a really supportive environment. The class formats and the personal training and attention to you as an individual is beyond anything I've experienced at other gyms.

I think the fact they have lots of great relationships with local health providers (e.g. the local physio, the remedial massage onsite, the local coffee shops ;-)) as well as a dietician on staff really helps with setting goals and achieving results.

What advice would you give to someone trying to achieve a training goal similar to you?

I guess it would be - that it is possible to find time to do things for yourself, and while it might feel a little selfish focusing on your own needs for a bit. The ultimate outcome (being healthier, happier and more in touch with your physical self) actually benefits everyone around you. I reckon the hardest part is getting started, but when it feels annoying or hard, just keep going - totally worth it in the end.
